Day 12 - Bruges

We kicked off the month of July by hopping on a train to Bruges.  The four of us were unanimous that on our ‘free’ day we wanted to go to Bruges, and so we did.
Once we got there, we walked everywhere.  Bruges is known as the ‘Venice of the North’ because of all the canals.

It was incredibly hot so we tried to stay cool by drinking lots of water and using umbrellas.  We walked all around.  We ducked into a few souvenir shops.  Then we stopped at the Zot brewery to have a snack (and beer).

And then more walking.
And chocolate!

We took a canal tour of the city.  It was  30 minute boat ride.  The boats are small because the canal bridges are so short.  A couple of times they had to tell people to hang onto their hats and duck.  It was nice to see the old, pretty city from a boat.

Then we found the Beer Wall.  It’s a wall of over 1,000 Belgian beers.  We were soooo hot and tired that we ordered some beer and sat for at least an hour in the shade just talking and resting.  It was wonderful!  The quotes on the wall were funny…Plato, Ben Franklin, and…Homer Simpson.

Then we found another chocolate shop that we went inside because it was COOL.  All of the chocolate shops have to have air conditioning, well, because it’s chocolate.
Nancy and I tried these Gin and Tonic shots.  Basically you took a bite, squeezed the drop and then ate the rest of it.

Then we had some amazing waffles.  I ordered caramel and my husband got strawberry.

We then walked to the town square and took some more pictures.  The architecture was amazing.

Then we enjoyed a pretty walk back to the train station to head back to Ghent.

And that was our amazing day in Bruges!
